The Half-Empty Measure

A greedy shopkeeper used a grain scoop shaved thinner than honest. Tenali bought grain and returned the measure with a haircut.

He trimmed the scoop further and left a note: “You sold me less; I sell you less.” The man recognized his own arithmetic and restored the measure. In the bazaar the phrase “Tenali’s haircut” became shorthand for consequences that fit perfectly.
