The Scholar’s Sandals

A visiting scholar demanded silk carpets to protect his ‘holy feet’. Tenali offered sandals made from scrolls of his own lectures.

The court howled; the scholar glowered. “If your words cannot bear your weight,” Tenali said, “why must our silk?” The scholar removed his shoes and walked barefoot the rest of his visit, which improved both his humility and the carpets.
