A ring vanished from the queen’s chamber. Birbal passed around a flour jar and asked everyone to touch the wall to summon a friendly spirit; the guilty would avoid the jar for fear of leaving proof. Only one person’s hands were clean. The spirit, Birbal said, prefers simple traps and guilty consciences.
